FFS: Imagine if we had 'prescriptive medicine' instead of what we have now
Challenge: Pick something to add to your diet that week that you weren't prioritizing.
Client Win This Week
“This month I went to 3 outdoor concerts. That’s 3 more than in the past 3 years!”
Olympics Update
Are you over the Olympics or really excited about the events so far? The US women’s rugby team really inspired me with their grit and resilience to get a first ever medal for the US in the sport. They also confirmed why I never played rugby!
The women’s soccer tournament has had loads of storylines and all of the remaining teams could easily win it! I’m excited to see what happens next.
Finally how about Simone Biles and ‘The Golden Girls’?
Survey Still Open
If you haven’t filled it out yet, I would greatly appreciate your help with a quick, less-than-5-minute survey to gather your input on the topics you'd like Go Long to cover. My aim is to tailor content that interests you and to deliver it in the most convenient formats. The survey is completely anonymous unless you choose to provide your email at the end.
Go Long in the Wild!
When talking to a friend this week, we somehow got on a topic that is very near and dear to me - prescriptive medicine. What does that mean? I talk about it below, but think of it this way. Right now, we have a healthcare system based on reactive medicine. It costs you extra money to be proactive because insurance generally doesn’t cover these costs to stay ahead of health issues. It measures health on metrics such as BMI that have been proven NOT to be a good indicator of health.
The system does not have incentives for you to be proactive, which is the next step in the healthcare continuum. Some screenings are now covered under insurance such as mammograms and colonoscopies after a certain age. But not enough. For example, I pay out of pocket to get a DEXA scan to understand my body composition, which is a way better way of understanding my health. Proactive medicine is a mixed bag with loads of work to be done.
After this, you have predictive and prescriptive medicine, which I talk about in this video. Ultimately this is going to require significant investment from both the public and the private sector on women’s health so vote for people who are going to fund these kinds of studies.

How Constantly Dieting Leads to Burnout
Thanks again to Teresa Romano for sharing her insights on eating disorders, disordered eating and women’s health. Here is a snippet on intermittent fasting:
Intermittent fasting has become mainstream but can lead to irregular or disordered eating problems like a "good or bad" diet mindset. It can promote under-eating, triggering biological hunger, resulting in subsequent binge eating due to loss of control during unrestricted eating windows. We might feel “good” when following the restriction just to feel “bad” when our biological hunger takes hold. This approach may not lead to weight loss and could worsen disordered eating due to the guilt associated with chronic dieting or “failing” the diet.
Myth Monday
This week’s Myth Monday was about caloric density vs. nutrient density. Thanks again to Dr. Jill for making these concepts very approachable on how to understand how to stay satiated throughout the day. Watch below!
Thank you for spending time with Go Long. Your feedback and comments are always welcomed and appreciated.
